is the statement that Japan did not invade west coast because they knew Americans were armed, true or not. If true where did the quote come from.

I do not know about the authenticity of the quote but in my understanding, Japanese faced a threat from the US Naval Fleet in Pacific Ocean and that's what forced them to attack Pearl Harbor to cripple the US Navy.
Attacking the mainland USA was never an objective as it would not have yielded any worthwhile results.
